La-Z-Boy Asks...

What inspired you to become a designer?

Design has always come naturally to me. My family has a rich history of working with textiles and the industrial arts. Through them, they instilled an eye for quality craftsmanship and detail that I discovered I can share with other people to help them better their lives and create a legacy of comfortability and style.

What's your favorite part of the design process?

Mileage varies with everybody, but one thing I enjoy most is finding that small spark of inspiration in the dark and letting it catch fire into a fully realised vision that they can not only see, but touch and feel, and know that it is home.

Where do you find design inspiration?

I am always fascinated by how people live in their space. From families with children and pets that want something beautiful that can withstand the everyday hubbub, to couples on the Cape looking to furnish their first vacation home. Helping people tell their own personal story with their home furnishings ignites the insatiable flame of my eye for design.

What do you wish every client knew before starting a project?

Rome was not built in a day. The heartbeat and necessity of what we do is predicated on collaboration, and giving the design and space room to breath. There are so many terrific things to consider when you begin your design journey, sometimes we forget the very real human element that goes into creating every stitch, frame, and fiber that make up the intricate vision we are trying to create. Every piece should tell a story, and what's a good story without character.

What was your favorite project you've ever worked on?

One of my client's put their trust in me and we created a vision for a Narnia themed room, complete with an antique wardrobe that opened into a hidden room. The goal was to give it the essence without feeling hokie. It was refreshing to be able to think outside of the box and have the trust from my client that our project would turn out better than imagined, and it did!

If you weren't an interior designer, what would you do for your job?

I would definitely be an Imagineer at Disney. So much of their vision statement, "Make Magic Happen" I have incorporated into what I strive to do, not just in a professional capacity, but in my everyday life.
